Awigke lives in Kandiga, a village in rural northern Ghana. She is a farmer and a shea butter producer and merchant. Thanks to your donation, Awigke received a bicycle and was taught how to take care of it. Awigke uses her bike to go to the larger market towns in her area, which are between 5 and 11 miles away! With the bike, she can carry four times as many nuts used to make shea butter, and she is confident that her production and sales will go up.
Owning a bike allows Awigke to ride to town instead of walking or paying private transport fees, which are quite expensive in Ghana, as there is no public transportation. Awigke’s son will also use the bike to get to school. She says, “I walk sometimes to save my son time so he can be in school and do his school work very well!” Riding a bike will save their family time and money, and increase their productivity and opportunity.
Awigke is very thankful for your donation, Lesley! Thanks for your support of the Village Bicycle Project!
